Battered rose bush

This poor rose bush got a right old battering in the gales we had a few weeks back and then the torrential rain yesterday added to its woes. It only flowers once, so I wondered if it could be cut right down to the ground after flowering and then staked in properly to avoid this happening again? Thanks in advance.

Yes you can do that.. cut it all off leaving about a foot above the ground... all the new growth it makes should be tied into some support as those canes will give you the flowers for next year.. that also means trying to keep any new unflowered canes you see there already in amongst it, that have already grown up.. but all the rest, the flowered wood, can be cut out..
...you will effectively be starting again with that rose.. but sometimes it's necessary to sort it out.. obviously  you won't get quite as many flowers next year as a result until it builds up again..

It's a very large rambler and needs a considerable supporting structure... do you have the name of your rose?   'Wedding Day' isn't it?  usually planted for sentimental reasons..

Thank you for your this. Sorry, not sure what the rose is as it was already in the garden when we moved here 6 years ago. I look forward to giving it a short back and sides once it has flowered !
