Scapes and more scapes

Very disappointed in my autumn-sown shallots (2 varieties) and garlic (3 varieties). All looked wonderful up to 3 weeks ago and I went so far as to congratulate myself on a bumper crop to come. Ha. Suddenly, scapes began to shoot up, another couple every day. There isn't a plant now that hasn't "scaped" (or whatever the verb is). I'm stir-frying the scapes most days (fortunately my dear husband is a huge fan of anything onion-y) but the bulbs themselves are puny and hard in the middle. Ho hum. Back to spring-sown alliums, then....

It’s been a very odd season … I doubt if it’s anything you’ve done or haven’t done … it’s just one of those things with the warm dry March and April, really cold wet May and then a heatwave … I’m surprised the plants know which way is up 🙃

Compared to May!  This year spring got colder as it progressed … no wonder plants are confused.

Well it's not bad news on the garlic at least a it always flowers around now, but is still a month or so away from harvest.
