Birch Tree Turning Yellow

This birch tree has grown happily in a pot for a few years. For some reason, it has suddenly started to turn yellow as if it is Autumn. I'm not sure whether I have under or over watered, or under or over fed, or what. Or is it just the result of the strange weather we've been having? Any ideas would be welcome.

It's struggling in the pot. They aren't really suited to pot culture, but the pot is far too small for it to sustain the top growth  it has.
Even in a bigger pot, it would need a good soil based medium to grow in, which would need refreshed each year to make sure there are enough nutrients available, and to maintain moisture levels successfully. If it's in compost only, that won't sustain it for any length of time.
The root system is probably taking up most of the pot contents by now.

It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

    Hi Fairygirl.
I was afraid that might be the case. It seeded itself in the garden but we don't have the space for a tree that size so I thought we might be able to grow it in a pot. Ah, well. Worth a try. I'll have to try and find it a new home somewhere in a bigger garden.
    Thanks.
