Feed the birds, shoot the rat  ;) I usually find that works a treat!

What kind of bird feeder do you have?

I had a problem with rats when I moved here in April.

I bought a baffle and fitted it to the feeder.

Got cameras in the back garden and I’ve not seen a rat since I fitted it. Just lots of hedgehogs!

    Sideways pic. No idea why!

Our feeder is not so dissimilar. We too have a baffle which acts as a perfect squirrel deterrent but the rat scurries on the ground, snaffling seed spilled there.

  • You can buy plastic round trays that screw into the bottom of the feeder. They stop the vast majority of the seed falling to the floor. Buy the smaller size ones though as Pigeons are able to land, rather ungracefully, on the larger ones, leading to spilt food. I live in London & had a serious issue with rats under the feeders & had to stop all feeding due to complaints to council from neighbour my feeders were attracting them The only way I could stop them completely was trying to find where they were coming from. Many hours sitting in the garden at night, and loads of flour sprinkled around revealed they were coming from a hole in my neighbours drain. Once the issue was dealt with they never came back.

Yes, a baffle is not much use against rats snaffling up the bits that fall, which is the main problem.
