Fir trees dying

Hello are these dying? They have been turning more and more brown since last year. Is there anything we can do? Thank you 😊

There’s nothing you can do, I’m afraid they are dead.

Yes … I’m sorry but @Lyn is right .., there’s no hope of saving those.

Conifers need much more water than people realise … especially when they’re relatively young and their roots haven’t reached very far down.

  • Oh dear! Well thanks both @Lyn and @Dovefromabove . Do I have to dig the roots out or should I chop them down and leave a stump?

We removed the roots when we dug our Leylandii hedge out,  cut the tops down leave about 2’ for wiggling, then use a pick axe or mattock and some hefty loppers and try to get them out. You can then enrich the ground and plant something else. I used home made compost and chicken pellets.
