Green leaf croton

When I bought my croton it was variegated, as on the plant label. Then the leaves dropped and the stem started to die back when a new shoot formed. I left it to grow and is now over 30cm tall and has a flower. However, the leaves are just green albeit healthy. I've read this has happened to other people but not why.
