@didyw if you're looking for something to plant in its rain shadow, aquilegias seem to do very well around the trunk of mine, as long as you don't mind them self-seeding everywhere.
Thank you everyone. I'm kind of getting used to the smell, and now the weather has turned it's not so strong. Apparently the bees love the flowers and ours are now covered in bees, so I guess it stays I love the tree itself, it looks lovely. I wouldn't want to get rid of the whole thing. We live on the east coast and there are a fair few in the area, so even if I got rid of mine I'd still be smelling all the others LOL!
