Hello my son sent these pics a moment ago to ask what it might be? I’m thinking philadelphus? Thankyou

You're right, philadelphus ('Virginal' probably). Nice mature one!

Its gorgeous!  Would one of these do well in acidic clay soil?

They don't mind any type of soil pH @FlyDragon. Clay of any type is fine. Bit of moisture is good, and they're excellent for slightly shadier sites   :)

I grow a smaller one called Manteau d'Hermine, which is like a mini version of P. virginal. Great if you don't have space for the bigger varieties  :)

Thankyou everyone for your helpful and kind replies. Since the heavy rain a week ago all branches are now bending downwards with weight and although they are now dry have not am straightened up at all. Can we prune this very hard in July after flowering? My son has inherited a fairly neglected garden with most things completely overgrown and trees that have grown in a thicket amongst other trees so wants to have a good tidy up and take things right back where possible - many thanks
