They also do it through netting ( over veg ) !!
Not everyone wants to fill their garden with prickly sticks or sharp canes - more likely to poke yourself in the eye than deter your furry neighbours.

    Oh that's depressing @philippasmith2 :( I thought I'd created a couple of 'safe' areas.

I read that citris peels can deter them, so I scattered some fresh cut up orange peels around my front garden where a cat used to hang around. It seems to have worked. The cat now walks past it without lingering much.

Over the last 7 years or so that I've seen cat shit problems on here, @Hostafan1 's bank balance may be liable to  investigation by the IRS - unearned income ?  :D
    Sorry Hosta  ;)

I have tried shaking some curry powder around the area but maybe it is not just the cats that don't like the smell though it does seem to work.

@Nanny Beach and @philippasmith2 and still ( some ) cat owners won't take responsibility or even acknowledge the harm their cats are causig.

At some point in the past we bought an ultrasonic cat scarer.  It works on a young ginger tom,who takes off like he has been shot,  but not on an old black cat that we think is a bit deaf.  Most of them hate water unless it is a bengal, so a supersoaker water gun could be used, they get wet but harmless.  I also use holly cuttings on seed beds.
