Stoney soil

Hi can someone give me some advice, we’ve recently had an extension and all the building materials killed the back garden grass , we had 2 huge mud piles that were from the footings and base, we was told to spread the mud out to even up the garden. We spread out the soil and raked up barrow fulls of stones and rocks however the ground is now rock hard. We want grass in the garden but don’t know the best way to go about it, it’s quite a large garden 😬

I think you needed to remove the building work spoils. Unfortunately, it's largely unsuitable as a growing medium when it's mostly sub soil and other rubbish. I'm well aware of what comes out of the ground to build extensions, having done it several times. The builders should have removed that using a skip. I don't know if it's worth contacting them, but I'd doubt it. It's certainly very poor practice by them. Worth a message if they have a social media presence.  If nothing else, it lets other prospective customers know. Take some photos too.

I appreciate that's not what you want to hear, but from your description, it's never going to be suitable for grass unless you remove it.  :/
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
