    Thank you everyone ,it makes facinating reading, I've learnt a lot. Wouldn't it be good if we got some honey!! :/

    Did not know how to do this but hope the picture worked out. Has anybody seen this , where the bees nest? extends outside the bird box. Is it to make the nest bigger , or does the excess help keep the inside warmer or more water proof. Never seen before.

    @hchessom I'm pretty sure that's a wasp nest and can see one standing guard.
    A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.

    ...  Which is also great. They make the most amazing papery material, that is worth keeping, once they have left. They don't re-use their paper nests.

    The material is wonderful for collaging with, if you know anyone so minded.

    We see them pretty much all year round.Lots in the conservatory, one flew in my cupboard while I was getting Tea bags out,looked for it, Hubby said it was in the roof THEN found it in the cupboard today,when he got something out!

    Absolutely - wasps are predators and eat many small insects which are sometimes considered troublesome, such as small caterpillars and sawfly larvae. :)

    I've not seen any wasps this year.
