Larvae on my Acer

Hi,
Can anyone help kindly identify these little monkeys that appeared on my old pot grown Acer in our courtyard. I suspect vine weevil but a neighbour suggested ladybird larvae (which I think unlikely).
They've arrived in the last two days and I've spent the morning washing them off. Last summer, vine weevil very nearly killed a nearby olive tree which only now is showing signs of recovery. I wonder if they've jumped ship, about 2 yards away!
I've given both plants a watering of bug weevil treatment and just hope I've caught them in time.
Any advice will be very much appreciated.
Regards
Simon
