Planting under conifers

I need to plant under the conifers, which at moment just bare soil. My dogs like to currently lay there, so i need to planted something very low and hard wearing. I was thinking of Irish moss plugs with a few very small plugs i have been growing for another project from seed. 

 Is Irish moss suitable? w=if not what should i consider?

Also anyone know how long irish moss takes to grow?

    Doesn't moss need a damp soil?

    Do weeds grow and thrive in the bare soil? If not, then it's likely you'd struggle to get anything to grow there.

    Maybe consider a few pots of full shade plants?  That way the dogs won't lay on it, and it will brighten up the area.

    Tbh had I had time to really think I'd have realised nothing grows there. So obviously planting in to the soil is not the way to go
