Rowan tree

I have a mature rowan tree which every year looks very healthy but this year it got buds on it but none have opened into leaf and also the bark in the trunk has splits in it particularly lower down on the trunk. I’m wondering if has died over winter or if it will come back??

Do you have a photo @john.davy? The little icon that looks like a mountain is the one for uploading photos.  :)
It does sound as if splits in the trunk may have caused problems though. It should be well covered in foliage at this time of year, if not flowers. If it's been there a while, it may simply have succumbed.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

Not hopefully for it as the more you look the more splits in the trunk you see

I'm afraid that does look very dead, sorry to say...   :/
Since 2019 I've lived in east Clare, in the west of Ireland.

Yes - I'd agree. The damage has been too much for it.
