Honeysuckle. Yellow Brown leaves.

We have had two honeysuckle growing either side of our front door for about 3 years now, and every year it grows well till about now, mid June then leaves start turning yellow and drop off. I put a load of compost at the base of each last October and they have grown very well this year. But now, once again leaves are turning yellow and dropping off. I've just heard they need moist conditions, so watered them very well  the last few evenings. They are in full sun all morning, then shade in afternoon.
Any advice welcome.

I'd suggest it's far too dry there for them. Honeysuckles do need lots of moisture, and if they're against house walls, there tends to be a 'rain shadow', which just means the rain doesn't really get into them properly.
They'll be struggling by this time of year because of generally drier, hotter conditions. Watering needs to be regular, and very thorough in that situation. A bucketful each, every other night, or even more if they're large, so that the roots can get right down and seek out moisture themselves in drier periods. They'll drop foliage if stressed due to lack of moisture.
I'm assuming they're in the ground though. They need plenty of room for their root systems, so if they're in pots or planters, that would be another reason for them struggling.

  • Thank you Fairy girl.
I had wondered about that as we have had a prolonged dry period.
I have done as you have suggested the last two evenings, so will need to continue. I learned a lot from your post. Thanks again.

Difficult without seeing them, but it's quite a common problem. Hopefully, they'll come away again.  :)

  • I will keep them well watered, and we shall see.
I will report back later in the year.
    Once again. Thank you.
