I suggest catching him on video then taking the footage to the local mayor. Explain to the mayor that this strange behavior makes you fear for the safety of your family and ask his/her advice on how best to act. Suggest that as a last resort you will need to involve the police but would prefer a more discrete solution such as an informal warning from a suitable person of authority.

I would check that you are sure of your facts and that you have not been using more water than you think. :D

Obviously, you shouldn't respond in kind but, if I had irrefutable proof that he was doing it, I think I might go against that sensible advice :o

An experiment to see if losing the use of his fingers annoyed him, perhaps ;)

Funny how people post messages to which we contribute our worth - and there's absolutely no response from the poster @David Pearson?

  • Sorry about the delay in responding. I have checked, as I did last time this happened. In both cases, having drawn off two watering cans from a large full butt, I find, after a day out, that the butt is empty. I’ve done some research and there are locking devices available; my fear is that he will then try something else. I think I’ll leave the diverter on winter setting for a while. Unless I can catch him on camera, going to the police is a waste of time. Thanks for your help everyone.

Get a small CCTV on it.  If he's doing that you don't know what else he will get up to.

Would it be worth discussing it with the friendly neighbours, to make sure that it's just you and no-one else is having a problem with this person? A friendly word from another neighbour who he gets on with might help. Or not, if he's a total a***holewho doesn't get on with anyone.
I'm wondering what he does with the water though. A full butt just left to empty would make a hell of a puddle.

Is he filching your water to water his own plants maybe?
