It looks similar to my Falstaff too. Souvenir du Docteur Jamain has very few thorns and it prefers shade.

Mine is the climbing version of Falstaff. First bloom just opening up here in NE Scotland.

Ok souvenir du dr jamain or Falstaff?

The Roses tend to droop downwards because they're fairly heavy. They dont make great cut flowers because the stems are short and not straight. I've just cut a branch with 3 Rose's and a bud there. Dont be confused by the peonies in the vase too.

This is an interesting link trying to compare the suggestions. I’m leaning towards falstaff but the blooms seem massive.

My Jamain are much smaller, but they are new in.

I would say, looking photos online, that Falstaff is denser with packed petals and Jamain is looser.

I would also say that looking at the cut ones, my Falstaff are denser than that.

I wonder if @Marlorena would be able advise on this?

But I can’t tell if it’s a big head or not. The internet falstaff looks huge. I’m leaning back towards SDDJamaib again.

I think I’m getting more buds than last year because of training it as a climber but a lot of buds are high up so maybe I need to be more drastic with pruning lower.

    'Souvenir du Docteur Jamain'...

..although sometimes described as a thornless rose, it does have thorns at the base, and on some canes part ways up.. the upper growth should be thorn free..
.. the foliage conforms to this rose..

.. another indicator is the very dark wine, or mulberry purple on the outer petals, very rich, and it's lanky hybrid perpetual growth habit..

..another rose similar is 'Guinee' but it doesn't develop that purple shading..

    .. not an Austin.
