Honey berry sudden death

I planted two potted honeyberries earlier this year. They both seemed to be doing fine, but one has suddenly died. Leaves turned brown and shrivelled up. The other one is fine.

No herbicides in the area, no obvious sign of pests. It has been hot but I have watered them both similarly.

Any guesses?

Do you have a dog?  It's just that my dog will occasionally select a certain bush as a marking point.. and a newly low planted bush doesn't do well with a daily dog wee.

Are you doing a deep water a few times a week, versus a bit from watering can every day?

  • Thanks.

No dog. Deep watering only. I wonder if I drowned it? There was some heavy clay mixed in from where the bank was built up, so maybe I created a bucket for it to sit in? Odd it lasted a few months then suddenly went splat.

We planted two Honeyberries in the ground at our allotment in Spring 2020.  One looked fairly healthy from the start, the other one looked like it was going to die.  We had almost given up on the poorly one, but it bounced back quite a bit.  It is still clearly not thriving compared to the neighbouring one, despite soil conditions which are exactly the same.

Sometimes it's down to the weaker genetics/health of one specific plant.  That may be the case for you.  Fruit bushes are generally hungry and thirsty plants, so personally I think they are always better in the ground.  Don't give up on your plant yet.  Have you a suitable site where you could plant it in the ground?

As well as making sure to water it regularly (moist but not wet), I would also give it a liquid feed every week until the Autumn.
  • It's been in the ground since mid March. Was growing fine and then suddenly last week gone brown and crispy.
