What is this weed and best way to get rid of it?

Posts

  • Someone will doubtless correct me if I am wrong, but looks like groundsel to me ( senecio something) - annual weed which spreads by fluffy seedheads ( bit like dandelions) so  I assume pull it out before it gets to that stage. Seems to be everywhere on the pavements outside so am sure a matter of time before it gets to me!

It's Groundsel, quite easy to pull up. Best not to let it seed or you'll have them everywhere.

Not sure what it is, but I have loads of these, and the seeds are similar to the fluffy white dandelion seeds. I just pull them out. Which I am sick of, but I won't be using weedkillers.

You need to hoe or pull it out the minute you recognise it cos if it sets seed you'll have weeds for years and years.

Groundsel ... pull up the bigger ones, hoe out the smaller ones ... give the ones with developing seedheads to the family budgie ... at least that’s what we did when I was small .... waaaaay back when ....

or leave a little patch for the Cinnabar caterpillars maybe? They will totally decimate them.

I’ve picked about 300 of these out of my gravel over the last two weeks. I’m getting them out when they’re about two inches so hopefully I’ll get on top of them at some point. It’s my new early evening ritual.

The word Groundsel took me back years and I mean years! I haven't seen any in a very long time but when I was young we used to have to look for it and bring it home as the canary loved it! Thanks for the memory!

Goldfinches like shredding up the seed heads as well. :)

@Fritillary That could be the reason I have so many of the darn things (weeds) in my garden.
