Forsythia growths?

Hi, I’ve noticed inside my forsythia there’s a lot of these strange looking growths. It’s a very old shrub and was wondering what they may be?? Thanks

    if forsythia is laying sideways, it forms aerial roots from nodes, which if they touch soil, will root.   This looks very congested. I would take out the thickest oldest branches as low as you can get them to let some air into the younger shoots.
