How many flowers can one lupin produce?

Bought some potted lupins 2 yrs ago, around 2ft in height, and planted them into the garden. Last year, 6 or 7 heads. Left to die back and has returned brilliantly this year. Believe it or not, 48 heads on one plant at todays count! Is this common?

    Also on another lupin, have this what looks like multiple fused flower heads. Anyone seen this before?

    That's most spectacular! Any chance you remember the name of that cultivar?

    It’s a fantastic year for lupins, some of mine are almost as tall as me,  just shows how much rain water these plants need in the Spring. 
    I hope this year will set a trend in this weather,   I’d love this every year.
