I have a 50 yr old acer tree and its blocking out the light what should I do ?

You can prune it, but not until the dead of winter.
If they're not dormant, they bleed a lot if pruned.
Ideally the temperature needs to be below 4c for several weeks to make them dormant.
If it's a sizeable tree, it may be best to reduce it over 2-3 years
