Clematis - is this wilt, overwatering/drainage, or hot roots?

GwuserGwuser Posts: 4
Hello

this clematis (giselle) has browned and wilted at the top, and browned at the bottom

Do you think this is wilt, or a watering / drainage problem, or heat getting to the roots (this one is in a pot because wanting it to grow over a seat, but the pot may be too small and the wrong location)

    Is it inside?
    I'd say it's dehydrated.
It's not a variety I know, but I had a look and it only gets to a small size, so I wouldn't think it would be very useful for growing over a seating area.

Thanks so much for this. It was well watered but - I think the soil was getting too hot. Thanks for the height mention - you’re right, no chance to grow to the height I thought!

The dead parts have been cut back and it’s been repotted, moved and the soil covered in slate

    Hope it comes back!

I wouldn't use the slate - it just provides a hiding place for slugs and snails, which love soft new growth on clems. Better just to keep it watered as appropriate. Gravel is a better choice for a decorative mulch if you want to use anything.
There could even have been some mollusc damage lower down on stems causing them to droop. They can gnaw through the outer layers, leaving them exposed.
Terracotta pots [if that's what it's in now] also absorb water, so just be aware of that too.  :)
