    That's an aphid.
If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.

Oh ok. It’s not behaving like I’d expect an aphid to behave. They are marching up and down the trunk and branches. Although I must say they seem also to be congregating on some leaves which are curling over. Should I just leave them or should I treat the tree? We’ve only had the tree size March 2020.

Depends how much they upset you I guess! If you want to use chemicals you may get rid but you'll kill the nice insects too. If you leave them they'll probably infest your tree. I mainly kill by hand but it's a full time job!

I’d rather leave them I think and tackle them by hand. The tree is by a pond so REALLY not comfortable with chemicals. Here goes then! It’s like having kids again 🙄

Squirt them with a jet from a hosepipe ... it may not get rid of their numbers but it’ll seriously deplete them so that the bluetits, ladybirds, lacewings and hoverflies that eat them will be able to do the rest of the job for you. 🐞
