Lawn advice needed please!

I have a lawn question. I’ve been in my house for nearly 3 years now but only now able to work on the back garden (the house has needed a lot of renovation). It is a large, rectangular space maybe 10mx15m and I’ll try to describe it!

Down one side is a path leading to a brick shed. Along the second half of the path is a weird hedge, plonked in the middle of the garden.
Around a quarter of the garden is a small lawn which sits about 5 inches above the surrounding ground and has a neglected flower bed with another half hedge in it that was planted to go around a wheelie bin.
The rest of the garden is covered in stones with 9 or so small fruit trees in them. I’ve cut down most of the trees to stumps, leaving two very well established ones, good enough for a hammock!
The stones have slowly been covered over by weeds and grasses over the months.
I am thinking about moving from here in the next 9-12 months and basically would like to dig it up and lay it mostly to lawn. I suspect though that there is a drain that goes through the middle of it as I can see a weird Metal T key sticking out the ground. This worries me for rotovating it as what if I hit something?? Would a rotovator be the best thing anyway considering all the tree roots?
Lastly, I do not have a large budget at all and would have to do most of the work by myself with the help of the kids. We’ve said it is our summer holiday project. Please help!! How do I go about this??

Can you post some pictures?  Use the mountain icon just above the text box.

Sure! It’s a total jungle and I’m a bit overwhelmed with where to start.
    thanks for the reply.

    That's better  ;)
I think you need to strim/mow the grass first to see what the plot is like. Then just tidy everything and take a view on it then. If you don't intend staying for a long while, it seems a bit pointless spending a lot of time and effort on it.
A screen of trellis and posts [to the left of the trampoline] would divide the garden and allow you to have a section of lawn in front of that, and a work area with the trampoline hidden beyond it. That's pretty easy to do, and inexpensive. A climber or two would cover it, although it's now a bit late to have plant screening if you're only going to be there for another 9- 12 months.
Is the shed to the right of the fence yours, or is your shed hidden by the hedge? The boundaries all seem a bit unclear. I'm assuming the left hand side just has that wire fence?
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

    Yeah sorry :D.
The shed to the right of the fence is the neighbours but it’s a semidetached shed
    iyswim!

I think you are right actually, if I’m not going to be there that long, maybe I shouldn’t do that much more than tidy what I can and sort out the small lawn...
