Do you get what you pay for?
I have often found bargain basement plant material, given a bit of TLC, often results in good strong plants. The "rescue bench" at the Garden Centre is a case in point - perennials that die down to over-winter may look a bit forlorn in the autumn, but can easily become excellent plants.
With seed, however, I'm beginning to wonder if you reap what you sow!
Previously, I had bought Sarah Raven white foxglove seed. Good germination, strong plants and superb display the next year.
Last year, because of the closure of Garden Centres, I was restricted in choice, and opted for seed available at the GC when it was allowed to open: Mr Fothergill's white foxgloves. They are blooming now (although one is purple!). However, the size of the actual flowers is smaller than previous experience, and they are more spaced out on the stem.
I still love them. I'm not complaining (honest!) but I think it's back to the drawing board for next year. Sarah Raven seed may be more expensive - but I have a feeling that they are more reliable and robust.
