Allium stems yellowing and failing

We planted half a dozen budding purple sensation alliums two weeks ago and they’re all starting to die. It starts with the stem below the flower head yellowing and losing strength, before the head falls over. The bed is south-facing, reasonably well-watered and topsoil is free draining.
Any ideas why this is happening and how to resolve it?
