Plant ID

I was given this plant by a friend, when I asked what it was she said “it’s got red flowers”  :D. The leaves smell when it’s touched so maybe it’s a herb? Any ideas welcome :)

It's one of the shrubby salvias, so it's related to culinary sage. There are several red varieties but the most popular is probably Royal Bumble, or it could be Hot Lips, another common/popular one which is a red & white bicolour but apparently tends to produce just red early in the season. Either way it loves the sun.

... There are also other bushy types like Jezebel, Red Swing, Maraschino, Red Velvet, Dyson's Maroon', Radio Red, Bordeaux, Heatwave Blaze, Wine and Roses, Ruby Star, Suzanne, Flame, Jemima's Gemand Mirage Cherry Red.

Not that you asked, but I would suggest pruning it down to the lowest green shoots, else that plant will continue to get woody. And take some cuttings of non flowering shoots while pruning.

  • Thanks for your help, much appreciated.  :)
