Is my Cercis canadensis 'Forest Pansy' dead?

The small shoots of leaves suddenly turned to black ash, and I notice these little reddish bugs all over the branches. Can someone tell me what is killing my trees please and if there's anything I can do to save it. Thank you so much

  • It looks like scale insects to me

I agree.  Cercis sometimes 'self-prune' whole branches, if they are short on water or under stress.  Scrape the scale insects off and if the dead parts don't start to grow leaves in the next 2 or 3 weeks, cut them off just above a live shoot, or right back to the main stem or ground, if multi-stemmed.  They usually send up new shoots from near the base.
A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.
  • Thank you so much, I will scrape off the insects by hand today. I may spray with Rose Clear as I imagine this does the same as Bug Clear. And hope my tree comes back to life.
