Newbie looking for help for my shrub rose!

Hello all,

I have very recently gotten into balcony gardening, and my mother bought me a lovely David Austin shrub rose maybe a month ago.

Things were going well until the lower leaves turned yellow and started drooping. I pulled a few very gently and they came off easily. I got rid of them all but now more yellow leaves have appeared, as well as some scorched tiny buds.

I’ve just been watering it and haven’t been giving it any food.

I’ve read up and I think it looks a bit like black spot but also overwatering and possibly heat stress so I am incredibly confused - please help me. 😥

Hi @greenkim49 Lovely present to receive, is it Desdemona?
I am not an expert but if I guide you wrongly I'm sure somebody will help. Lots of us on the Rose thread have Desdemona, it is lovely, I got one like yours about the same time. If I were you I would repot it into a 25-30lt  capacity pot (go bigger in future years) using loam based compost, add some slow release rose feed and water well every 2 or 3 days in this heat. I had some of those yellow leaves and pulled them off too but now all is well. I imagine the small pot in this heat is stressing your rose after a difficult May .
I would also deadhead the spent blooms.
  • Hi there, Tack! It is indeed a Desdemona 😊

I have ordered a large container to repot it (her) next week - in the meantime I have moved her more into the shade for the meantime to help with the heat (unless there are better ideas which would be gratefully received) and I have deadheaded as advised.

    Thanks for your help!
