When to water

The past week or so has been very warm and dry, with a few plants wilting in the extreme heat in our south facing garden. Is it best to water in the early morning to prepare them for the day ahead or in the evening to replenish moisture?

 Thanks!

I think early morning is best, with a deep water.  It helps to make a wall of dirt a foot out from the base of the plants.. or even a trench if you can't do that.. to help the water soak in near the roots.  Water with a hose.  I use a timer on my phone to make sure they each get a good soak before moving the hose end to the next plant.  Better a deep soak every few days than a short water every day, so that you encourage deep roots.

Watering at night might encourage slugs and mildew.

  • Ok, thanks. How long do you water for?

dont get me started on slugs, I’m out most nights pulling them off my lupins and Salvia’s!

If anything is starting to wilt, I'll give it a drink straightaway whatever the time of day. Other than that, first thing in the morning for me.

I prefer night watering,in the morning the sun and wind where we are dried stuff so much, you have to do it again. How long, at least 60 minutes here, that's just the back garden. Hubby watered at 7am today,by lunchtime my potted on stuff I had grown from seed, dahlias in pots were wilted
