Hedge too close to house?

Hi Folks,

We have recently moved house late last year and only recently I have been wondering if the two boundary hedges are an issue as they are right up to the side of the house. I have attached two pictures below. Do you think this causes a problem to the house being so close? They do need trimmed and I will be doing that this weekend...

Many thanks.

It's privet, which isn't deep-rooted so it shouldn't be a problem for the foundations. If you're worried about it touching the rendered walls (or you want to paint the walls) you could cut it back to leave a small gap. Privet grows back from old wood so you can cut it as hard as you like. Trim it so that the sides are sloping with the top narrower than the base, to keep it leafy down to the bottom (a wider top shades out the lower parts and it goes bare lower down over time). Do check that there aren't any birds nesting in there before you cut - the cat looks like it's seen something interesting!
Doncaster, South Yorkshire. Soil type: sandy, well-drained

  • No, it won't harm your foundation.
