Group 3 Clematis

I am trying to learn about my garden after many years. Concentrating at the moment on Roses and Clematis and learning what I can from the internet. I have an established Group 3 Clematis (Rouge Cardinal) which only has one stem. Is there anything I can do next year to encourage more stems? Any advice would be appreciated.

Keep it well watered, mulch it generously keeping the mulch away from the stems and in October or November cut it back to 6’ if you choose, but that is optional. In February or early March cut it back to healthy buds 18” from the ground. A sprinkling of fertiliser next year early in the growing season will help.
