Pruning new wisteria

We planted a wisteria this year to grow over an arched pergola. I know established wisteria have a pruning cycle, but to train the new plant up the vertical support should I be cutting off all side shoots over winter and just training in one main shoot? Or training 2 or 3 shoots up the support?
It should I let it wander for the first year or two then start shaping it?
