Strawberries or Nettles?

Hi,

I bought a children’s grow-your-own strawberry kit from Aldi (I’m a new gardener) and when watering them this afternoon I stung myself on the plant. From what my brief google search turned up it sounds like I might be growing nettles not strawberries, I’d appreciate some more experienced input!

The short one is a strawberry the tall one could be a nettle hitching a ride.
Try rubbing the back of your hand over it, you’ll soon know, but it’s definitely not a strawberry.

The taller plant is a nettle.

Use gloves and a kitchen fork to prise the nettle out of the pot. Try and keep the little plant in.

😂 at Lyn, reminds me that my OH stung himself on nettle, went to pick what he thought were dock leaves to rub on it and subsequently picked more nettles instead.

Did you use soil from the garden, or did it come with the kit?  I got lots of nettles in pots when I used garden soil.  If you are wanting more advanced strawberries, I got some from B&Q last month for £1 each!  I'm very impressed that some are almost ready to pick!

A kitchen fork... there’s nothing like the right tool for the job. And that is just not. 😀
how could he mistake a nettle for a dock!.

Nettles are still a useful plant. You've probably grown enough for half a cup of tea there.
If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.
  • Thank you all for your kind help! My other half is now demanding I make him nettle tea!
