That looks like aphids/ black fly. How big is the tree? Is it practical to wash them off with the jet setting in your hose?
    In London. Keen but lazy.
  • Its a small tree. I can't reach the top with a hose. Every leaf is covered in them.

Give them a good squirt of water. You want to try to avoid chemical sprays because you will kill their predators too.
If the water doesn't work to your satisfaction, there are other things you can do with soapy water. Someone else will explain how to do it . I've never done it myself.

  • Thanks for your help!

Looks like elderberry and blackfly, a match made in pest heaven!  Only broad bean tops can get close to elderberry trees when it comes to attracting black aphids.
A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.
