Hi our ferns have put on beautiful new growth but the old growth is very messy, do we just remove it?

I just cut off the old tatty growth before the new fronds started uncurling this year, not sure if was the right thing to do but the plants look great now

Hi there, @Aconite did exactly what Monty advised in a recent GW episode.  Add some blood fish and bone around the base and you will get strong healthy growth - my ferns responded really quickly with full crowns of lush green fronds.
    Wirral. Sandy, free draining soil.

I remove the old brown fronds that I usually get at the base of the plant, just to keep it looking tidy.
