Bent apple tree

Hi guys I planted an apple tree last year which bent because I didn't remove the apples and there was lots of strong wind and so the leader bends backwards.
I have tried tying a cane up the tree today to try to straighten it out at my mums advice and wonder if I have done the right thing?
Should I also cut off all thd developing apples as well so the tree can put effort into growing stronger?
Should the splint go right down jnto the ground? (Its not currently)
I don't want to cut the branch off as its almost half the tree length and then there's hardly any tree there as its only about 5 foot at most
Any advice is appreciated
