I know nasty bacteria are just that, nasty, but they must be vastly outweighed ( quite literally) by the numbers of neutral or beneficial ones, on which all life on earth depends.
If more people realised how many bacteria are involved just in keeping their bodies functioning, they might have a different attitude to 'anti-bacterial'!
Haha, pansyface! I do use fabric conditioner, I enjoy both the scent and the softness. As a child, in a poor household with six children, we only had one set of sheets per bed. When they were in the wash, we had to sleep with just the blankets. These were old army blankets, khaki in colour, and felt like they were knitted from wire wool! It is still a luxury to me to have fresh cotton sheets etc. I also use hair conditioner, but not too much. I have really thick grey hair that needs a bit of taming, to prevent me looking like I’ve been dragged through the proverbial hedge backwards.
I know exactly what you mean Ergates, then coats on top in the winter. I don’t feel guilty about using 2 capfuls of fabric conditioner and two 5p size squirts of hair conditioner in a week. Years ago, not too many actually, I washed my hair in washing up liquid and used clothes conditioner on it. In the grand scheme of things it’s nothing but it takes our mind off the really important issues of the world.
Gardening on the wild, windy west side of Dartmoor.
I never use fabric conditioner. But my next door neighbours on both sides use so much of it that I can smell it when their laundry is drying outside. And because they use different ones I literally can tell who’s doing laundry on a particular day 😄😄😄
If I have ordered some clothes from Ebay, I can certainly tell through the parcel, before opening, if they used fabric conditioner or not. I have not got to the point of telling which brand it is, yet.
Carbolic soap! No! My dad used to get bars issued to him at work when I was a child. Money being very tight, he would bring them home for the family to use. At least there probably weren’t many germs around, but I so hated the smell.

I even remember my mum using Borax!
