Amelanchier tree mildew treatment gone wrong!

Dear fellow gardeners,

We have three beautiful (and until recently healthy) amelanchier trees in our garden. They recently all started to show signs of powdery mildew.

After researching different treatments, we decided to spray them with neem oil (diluted as per the packaging instructions). We did the work on a cool evening with no direct sun. To our great shock, all three trees have started to drop leaves like in autumn. The leaves are slightly yellow and have black spots (see attached images).

We are at a loss what to do next and really want to save our trees. Has anyone had a similar experience and can help? Many thanks in advance. D + J

Powdery mildew usually strikes when plants are dry at the roots, so try giving them a really good drink a couple of times a week (a bucket or two per plant, poured on slowly so it soaks into the ground and doesn't run off). It looks as if yours have quite a lot of competition from other plants, so maybe give extra water because the other plants will use some.
