Gnats & Fly's

I'm all for Peat free compost and have used the alternatives for several years now.

But the major problem with all the alternative types is that they seem to be infested  by Gnats & Fly's.

Is there a method known to stop this infestation ? I have looked at the compost when filling the pot's ect ect and Nothing seems out of the ordinary

Is this with plants growing under cover?  If so, yellow sticky traps hung near the plants together with a couple of cm of grit spread over the surface of the pots works.

Houseplants are 'under cover' so the traps and grit will help with those.
I think some composts come pre-infected with eggs and it's not just limited to peat-free ones.
