Filling in border between path and edge of grass

Hi,

My elderly parents want to replace the existing soil border with grass seed or a strip of turf as they are struggling to maintain it, and it has also become a tripping hazard for them.
The existing grass is not level with the path. I have uploaded a picture which shows a green and red line.
Green line: grass is either level or lower than the path.
Red line: Grass is higher than the path (1.5 - 4 cm)

The existing grass is 150 cm wide and approx. 400 cm in length
I am struggling to see how I can 'patch' this up given the differences in height. I suggested that it might be better lifting the existing turf, levelling the ground and laying new turf. They both think this is a drastic solution and expect me to just throw in some soil and grass seed.

They have tried calling several local gardeners but to no avail.

Owing to their age I am looking for a solution that doesn't increase the risk of tripping, etc -  I'm hoping somebody could offer up some advice.

Cheers,

John

I would suggest that they should get somebody in to take up all that grass and and make the existing path wider (or indeed have that dug up and a completely new path laid). The path looks extremely narrow in the photo and doesn't even extend to the width of the door. That would make it much easier for two people to walk side by side, or even a walker/wheelchair if that ever became necessary. It would also eliminate the grass mowing for that strip.

Even if you lifted the uneven turf and infilled the gap, it would probably still be a trip hazard because of the different surface textures underfoot.

Good luck with trying to convince them though!
