Pond

I have dug the hole and I will be inserting a small pre formed plastic pond.

I will use a lump hammer to smack any stones in the side or bottom of the soil.

I have a large old bath towel and some thin builders sand.

? Should I add the sand or the towel first.

Thanks.,

If it is a pre formed pond, you won't need a liner - if that was what you were going to use the towel for ?
Dig hole, insert pond, infill sides with excavated soil adding more if necessary to allow you to grow plants around the perimeter. Do it gradually and allow the soil to settle whilst adjusting the pond to ensure everything is level.
I may have misunderstood - if so, my apologies and hope you enjoy your finished pond :)

Inserting a pre formed pond nearly caused a divorce here.  Its not easy, we ended up buying the liner, much cheaper and very easy to lay.
We had to put loads of rocks in the preformed for the tadpoles and tiny frogs to climb out on, also fo the odd hedgehog that wanted a drink
as Philippa said, if you’re  not planing on putting the sand down and the towel to lay on, you don't need it.

When we used a preformed pond, the only advantage of laying a bed of sand was that, as the water weighed down the bottom, we ended up with a perfectly flat base of sand rather than a slightly bobbly soil base.

@Lyn, funny - laying a liner nearly caused me to want to divorce the idea of having a pond. I spent four hours in waders on Friday trying to get wrinkles and folds out and in respectively. A nightmare.
