Onions - Suspected Stem & Bulb Eelworm

I have checked in Dr Hessayons book on veg and I think this is what has attacked my onions.

The book says...

Swollen  distorted folliage indicates attack by this microscopic soil-living pest. Young plants are killed older ones produce soft bulbs which cannot be stored.

Mine are wet at the junction of the bulb to the leaves that are twisted around and flopped over.

My neighbours plot has the same problems with some of hers.

Im not that experienced in onion problems but I think that as we have had one of the coldest and then wettest months that the micros have not been killed off.#

I have dug up all the onions and removed from sight and cleaned the spade in a trough of water.

? Any thoughts please friends.

I have cleared the 2 beds now of onions and will clear the 3rd bed of garlic as they are next to the infected beds and are already rusty.

    1. What cant I grow in the ex-onion beds and for how long.

2.What can I grow as i am supplying a charity for homeless people and want to maximise the space and beds.

I have packets of the following that CAN be started now.

    Organic Osaka Purple Mustard Greens
Minutina / Erba Stella Buckshorn Plaintain
    Mizuna Oriental Greens
    Azur Blue Kohl Rabi
    Sicilly Giant Radish
    Yuushou Pak Choi
    Japanese Hohei Spinach.

    Any experience/help much appreciated
