Something has died in my garden

I don't know what it is and I don't really want to know. It's been there about two weeks. The smell and size of the area indicates it was a small animal.  I've tried covering it with soil, then a vinegar and water solution. I don't want to dig it up as I'll have to deal with the smell in this warm water. Is there anything else I can try?

Can you see anything at all that the smell might be coming from? I'm wondering if it might actually be a stinkhorn.

There was a strange black sticky looking mess and something that looked like grey skin with pinkish flesh inside it.

I would dig a hole as deep as I could nearby and use my spade to move the corpse into the hole and bury it properly ... maybe with a good sprinkling of lime on it first if I had some available. That’ll get rid of the smell.
Otherwise it’ll carry on smelling until it’s totally decomposed. That’s life I’m afraid, and death :/

Lets hope its not someone's pet!  However bad the smell was I would have to check it out.
