Cistus Hybridus

I have a cistus hybridus which has grown quite large and out of shape and I don’t believe it has been cut back at all. I would like to be able to get it into a better shape and reduce the size of it for next year. I understand I can’t do anything until it has finishing flowering but would appreciate any advice.

Hi. They don't like hard pruning and don't grow back from woody stems (bit like lavender), so there's a risk of having bare stems. My suggestion is a) take some cuttings in case it doesn't work! b) cut whole stems out, rather than chopping the ends off stems c) look for growing tips that you can pinch out to encourage bushing out.

They are apparently short-lived plants, so maybe be prepared to take it out and replace. Good luck!
  • Thank you, appreciate your advice. I will take some cuttings and keep my fingers crossed. It blooms lovely so am quite reluctant to get rid of it solely for the shape.
