Wilt on Clematis "Miss Bateman"

Planted this to grow up a climbing rose earlier this year. It was doing really well but has completely shriveled over the last 2 days, which I'm assuming was wilt. I've cut back to below ground level and removed all material. If I've saved it will it grow again this year?
Also is this likely to happen to it every year now?

It would have been better to upload a photo to determine that. Wilt is quite distinctive and happens very suddenly, often with black, or very dark markings, on foliage and stems. Here's a link

If it's right next to a rose, it could be struggling because of the competition, which would certainly make it more vulnerable. Did you try watering heavily first to see if it recovered? That's the usual first step.

It's also quite normal for some stems on clematis to wilt a bit -it can be slug/snail damage further down, or even damage from rubbing on a support or fence etc. They can wilt a bit in hot weather too, especially if they've been short of water while putting on the large amount of growth that they do in spring.

In any case, it will regrow.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
  • That link is exactly what it looked like, it's definitely not under watering i actually thought it might be overwatering if anything when it first started collapsing. I've just added another 6 inches of soil and some more screening around the roots from the sun
