Is this a Papaver Somniferum?

It’s shot up in my garden and I don’t know what it is! It’s currently about 12” tall.

Hmmm 🤔 can we see the growing tip please?

I'd say yes as well, although until the flower buds show, it's also very similar to smooth  Sow thistle.

That’s my thought too @fidgetbones ... I’d play a waiting game and be ready to yank it out at the first appearance of ‘the wrong sort of bud’.

I get both in my garden.  Seen there, I can tell the difference fairly easily, there is a more blue green shade to the poppies. It is more difficult from photos.

I'm veering more towards sow thistle than poppy, but wait until flower buds form then you'll be able to tell for sure and whip it out if it's undesirable.

I'd agree with @JennyJ - leaves are a wee bit too green and rough for Papaver.
  • Thanks everyone - now I need to google images of the two different types of buds so that I can be ready to spring into action if it's an undesirable bud!

Though - to clarify - the photos make it look much greener than it actually is. In the flesh it's more of a sage colour, with blueish undertones. I measured it and its 21" tall, with a smooth stem from which the leaves branch off.
