You won't lose it, but that amount of sun at the start isn't ideal for a larger tree or shrub. A full sun site is always difficult unless planting during dormancy as I mentioned earlier. The bigger, more mature the tree is, the harder it is to get right.
Frost and snow certainly won't worry it in future, but it's always wise to avoid planting anything during frost/ice.
Snowy conditions are fine for planting anything woody though. It's no different from planting in wet weather, unless you're having proper snow of course - ie more than a foot or two, as that can be difficult, just because it's hard to dig the holes .  :)

  • I very much appreciate all the advice I've received today, and I'm hopeful my wee tree will be here for a long time. I usually find gardening the most relaxing thing I do but the past couple of days I've fretted over this tree more than anything else ever in the garden. I'll keep you posted.🙂

    Thanks! This helped me too
  • I'm no tree expert but sounds like your tree is a bit stressed. Maybe give it a bit of extra love with some fertilizer each season or a few extra waterings during dry spells and see if that encourages it. Focusing on the ground around it might help too by ensuring the root soil is healthy. Hope that helps!
  • @fairy Hello, new to forum, spotted convo when looking for advice on my Sorbus Chinese Lace. Young tree, planted in early April, has been doing really well but this week has gone all floppy, I've been watering but maybe not as much as it needs in this hot spell. Also spotted a white powdery layer on the young branches, not the leaves themselves. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
It definitely could be a potential watering issue, especially with the hot weather. Have you been keeping an eye on the soil and how much moisture it has? You could try mulching around your tree to help keep the soil from drying out too quickly. As for the white powder, it could be a sign of powdery mildew, so try to keep foliage dry and keep an eye out for any other symptoms.

Please don't feed your tree while it's stressed.  Just as you wouldn't give rich food to a person who's ill, so you shouldn't burden a sick tree with fertiliser.  Just water!
Since 2019 I've lived in east Clare, in the west of Ireland.

It seems to be a favourite bit of advice from this new poster @Liriodendron ;)
There's no great mystery with the tree - it's a larger specimen, has been planted recently, and isn't in ideal conditions. It'll be fine as long as the right care is given until established. Rowans should never need food once planted. It's about the soil and drainage being right for them - as with most trees.
The OP has fully described where it's growing, in what kind of site, and what care it's had so far, so that has determined the advice given.  :)
