Lacecap Hydrangea

I bought a lacecap hydrangea last year and it had beautiful long stems and flowers. This year we had a stint of really bad, sharp frosts and I lost a lot of the new buds that had started to form. Someone recommended to me, to cut back the old foliage to the ground and it should help with the regrowth. It now appears to be growing, but it's all at soil level. Will it shoot back up into the long stems throughout summer, or do I need to do something to encourage the growth?

Not sure if cutting to ground level was the right thing to do as usual pruning advice is to cut 1/3 unless there was damage further down the stems. They can take severe pruning though so should still be alright. A feed of balanced fertiliser should help with the regrowth.

It won't have done it any harm, but you should only have cut back the damaged areas to new growth. It's a pity you were given unsuitable advice, but it will recover.

Unfortunately, you'll now just have to wait until it grows again, which will take a while.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
